Yoyo you are talking rubbish that no Pakistani film has been houseful.

Regarding KTSK, the manager of the Metropole Cinema has said the film has broken the 58 year record of the Cinema regarding business for the first 3 days. The previous record was held by the film Commondo.

If its true then its excellent especially by showing the trailor on B4U. B4U is a free to air channel and is widely seen. A good strategy and Reema needs to promote the film on one Pakistani channel also.

Charizmatic I toally agree with the points that you have made.

The fact is our print media loves to ridicule and make fun of Pakistani movies. Whenever you read a review the first thing the reviewer does is to find as many faults with the film as he can.

The second thing is which is even more annoying is this comparison with Indian movies which is totally crazy.

What is our print media trying to imply by comparing Pakistani movies with Bollywood. What is so special about Bollywood. An film industry whose 90% of films are copies of Hollywood flicks, we now where the inspiration of there music comes from. Majority of films are full of vulgarity.

The only thing where they are ahead is technical facilties and they have huge budgets for filmaking.

Why can't our media review Pakistani films on their ownindividual merits.

In every country it is the media which promotes things like films, music and the arts. In Pakistan instead our media loves to glorify Bollywood. A sad state of affairs. No wonder the people of Pakistan are obsessed with Indian films and Indian TV.

I cant say anything about the box office status of the film but there is no way it can be a copy of Main Hoo Na as most of the shooting of Tere bin jiya na jaye had already been completed before Main hoo na was released last year.

‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ Lollywood’ssaving grace

The good thing about ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ is that there is no slapstick comedy, cheap thrills or exaggerated action sequences. Of course, the masala and glamour is all there but with refined taste

To say that Pakistani cinema is on the brink of disaster is a statement that has been done to death in talk shows and random discussion. While our film industry has always been the target of abuse, no one has ever come up with a lasting or permanent solution. Excluding outsiders, even the filmwallas have done almost next to nothing to improve the situation. We all know that films like Fauja Amritsariya, Billoo Badshah or Bhola Suneyara, no matter how well made, can never save the industry. But so-called better films like Shararat, Kyun Tum Se Itna Pyar Hai, Hum Aik Hain, etc, have also been equally disappointing. As a result, local cinegoers now believe that Pakistani film-makers can never make good films.

But before writing off Pakistani cinema for good, let’s give it one last chance. If those within the industry cannot do any good, perhaps outsiders can salvage the remains and that is where Mubasher Lucman’s Pehla Pehla Pyar comes into play. With previous experience in television and advertising, Mubasher has ventured on to the big screen with his debut big-screen production. The film is set to release sometime early in August and is already being touted as the most expensive Pakistani film ever made in recent times.

The cast is a delicious blend of two generations of Pakistani cinema and features the likes of Nadeem and Resham, Zara Sheikh, Ali Tabish, Ali Sher, Kanwal and Sajid Hasan. Models Wasif Butt and Maheen and TV actress Arshia Awan also make their silver screen debut in important roles. Film make-up has also been a much-neglected category and to make amends, Depilex was hired to do the job. Fashion designer Aasia Saail was in charge of the wardrobe. As long as looking good was concerned, the cast was well taken care of.

Pehla Pehla Pyar has been shot in Thailand and Dubai. At a time when film-makers do not base their ventures on good scripts and are more inclined towards glamour and fiction, the film with a strong storyline by Irfan Ahmed Urfi and a crisp script compiled by veteran Ali Sufyan Afaqi, has strong foundations.

Resham calls her role in Pehla Pehla Pyar “the role of a lifetime”. As an actress with inborn class, her grievance over the years has been that film-makers have never exploited her true potential and unjustly ranked her in the league of the aging lot.

She says: “Pehla Pehla Pyar is quite a landmark in my career. It is after a very long time I have really enjoyed playing a character. And it is perhaps for the first time that the entire cast of a film oozes a sense of style. My role demands a variety of moods — she’s happy and carefree in the beginning then come moments of love and emotion. Eventually, my character adopts the image of a housewife leading to sorrow and struggle. Mubasher Lucman has visualized my role well and I have tried to do justice to it.”

During the shooting, both the cast and crew faced hard times but came through with flying colours. Film-making is a gruelling task and the good thing about Pehla Pehla Pyar is that there is no slapstick comedy, cheap thrills or exaggerated action sequences. Of course, the masala and glamour is all there but with refined taste. For instance, the heroine’s classmates are not the aging extras of Shahnoor Studios but girls from well-to-do families who do justice to their respective roles. The film was also shot on location rather than some film studio premises.

Debutante Ali Tabish is all excited and geared up. “I was given a big responsibility,” he says, “as mine was a lead role opposite veteran actors. I had to put in my best effort. To shine among such big names stars is easier said than done but I knew Pehla Pehla Pyar was the opportunity of a lifetime. I’m sure no one will be disappointed after seeing the film.” Judging Ali Tabish by his looks alone, one can assume at this point that Lollywood has a new ‘chocolate hero’.

Zara Sheikh, too, has a very significant character in Pehla Pehla Pyar. Her song Hai Hai Re is one of film’s main highlights and pitting Zara against artistes like Nadeem and Resham brings out the best in her. “My character in the film has very interesting shades. I also enjoyed working with a competent team and it will definitely bring about a good change in Lollywood. Mubasher Lucman is a good addition to the list of film directors and the way he handled every detail is admirable. He will go a long way and I have a very positive feeling about Pehla Pehla Pyar.”

Mubasher Lucman was in no hurry to release a half-baked Pehla Pehla Pyar as he took his time to mould the screenplay to perfection so that once out, no critics would be able to point out flaws in it. The film has been treated rather well and technically speaking, it’s Pakistan’s most sound technical venture as the film processing has been done in Bangkok. Yet another highlight is the film’s soundtrack comprising of six very musical and catchy numbers. The soundtrack was recently launched at an impressive ceremony in Lahore and has been well-received by music buffs countrywide.

Pehla Pehla Pyar is bound to be a harbinger of Lollywood’s better future. What better dose of life does an ailing and dying industry need? With Reema’s Koi Tujh Sa Kahan, Imran Malik’s Tere Bin Jiya Na Jaye and Javed Sheikh’s Khulay Aasmaan Kay Neechay also to grace the silver screen sometime soon, let’s all celebrate and bask in the rebirth of Lollywood. Long live Pakistani cinema.

Pehla Pehla Pyar is an admirable attempt by Lollywood’s newest director Mubasher Lucman, not because his name is zara hat ke but because it features new vocalists and a new musician: Yousaf Khan Munna. The soundtrack kicks off with Subah Kay Noor Jaisi which comes from the drawer of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and R.D. Burman. Although the theme of the song has been previously tried with success (e.g. Eik Larki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga), the amazing vocals of the newcomer creates a lasting impression. Zindagi Main Tum Na Hotay, which follows, is a simple melancholic song, where both the sweet-sounding vocalists are aided by an irresistible flute that helps the duet succeed. The title track goes well as a potential chartbuster mainly because of the vocalists’ good work, some unbelievable Indian-style chorus and an orchestra that is outstanding overall.

Yeh Dunya Ki Rasmein begins in tremendous style with brilliant guitar and a nostalgic touch while the amiable lyrics, impressive vocals, masterful piano, aesthetic violin and soulful trumpet make it easily the best song of the soundtrack. Hai Hai Re, the next song, sounds like a situational number but only the director can determine the situation. Jagi Jagi Hai is worth listening to mainly because of the fresh vocals and fast pace. The moment the number takes off the listener is transported to the golden era of Jatin-Lalit, who composed songs for DDLJ, Yes Boss and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai etc.

It is hard to believe but there’s a number titled Seth Dawood Wants a Dying Girl! We all know Ram Gopal Verma’s degenerated controversy but I am sure that Seth Dawood won’t even notice this publicity stunt. In the end a qawwali, Dil Na Kisi Ka Toroway Banday, Keh Gaye Bulley Shah makes it to the silver screen but after listening to it, one deduces that it is not a fitting tribute to the great Sufi poet.

The names of the new vocalists haven’t been mentioned in the release but their induction has certainly made the difference, making this album a better listen than most of the usual stuff, including Ajab Gul’s ajeeb si hit. Pehla Pehla Pyar could prove to be the pehla step in the right direction, otherwise Lucman will have to look somewhere else for experimentation.

Shahrukh its Shabnam majeed. She has sung for Pakistani films but in last couple of years every big Pakistani film has got Indian singers.

This unfortunate trend started with Ghar kab ayo gaye, then Tere pyar main followed with Yeh dil aap ka huwa.

Currently all the producers and directors are following this trend which is a total shame.

Brilliant and I am very pleased for Imran Malik and his father Pervez Malik.

Thanks for the excellent review Charizmatic. At least after this it shut up the people for whom our industry is either doomed or is a one hit film a year industry.

Charizmatic if you take in to account all the quality Pakistani movies from the last five years where do you rate this. Take in to consideration the following films:

Ghar kab ayo gaye
Tere pyar main
Mujhey chand Chaiye
Rukhsati
Khoye ho tum kahan
Moosa Khan
Yeh dil aap ka huwa
Chalo ishq larain
Laag
Commondo
Larki Punjaban
Salakhain
Kyun tum say itna pyar hai.

On the one hand Maria Wasti has always refused to work in Pakistani films but has straight away agreed to an Indian flick. Even its only a guest appearence.

She is supposed to be one of the most talented female artist of Pakistan.

The film revolves between Imran Malik and Ehsan Khan but there is Nadeem who is the father of Zara Shiekh.

The film is a love story and what length both Imran Malik and Ehsan Khan go to find their true love.

This is what I have read about the film last year.

I did see Salakhain when I was in Pakistan earlier this year but I will surely see it again. One has to support our own film industry.

Just praying that the publicity is up to the mark.

The above makes interesting reading especially I am more intriged about Mubasher Luqman and his film PPP.

Well it looks like that the Jang newspaper are totally behind him. I think they have not heard of "Tere bin jiya na jaye" and "Kohi tujh sa kahan".

New intrigues being hatched after Film Awards fiasco

By Shahab Ansari

AFTER the fiasco at the recently-held National Film Awards; new groups and power brokers have started intrigues, twists and turns in a totally collapsed industry.

The dispute between Mian Amjad Farzand group and the establishment has now come out in the open. The former openly called the Federal Chairman Censor Board a cheat and branded him a person who bestowed awards on his favourites, while the latter called him and his cronies a bunch of people who did not want film industry to make any progress.

The industry is divided into three main groups: one that favours Mian Amjad, the other that is against him, while the third sits on the fence and blames both of them for the dismal situation of the industry in Pakistan. This group is trying to gain the sympathies of the labour and the lower class unionists. The big wig of this group is a studio owner, who wants the hub of the industry to shift to his studio so that the major work load is transferred there and he be the sole beneficiary.

Among the producers and in their powerful body, All Pakistan Film Producers Association, there are also three main groups. One is led by Mian Amjad Farzand, other by the Pushto-speaking people and the third has taken a back seat in the absence of real leadership. They include mostly producers from the Gujranwala division. There are two silent contenders for the top slot: Shahzad Rafique of the "Salakhain" fame and Shaan Mustafa whose "Commando" was a big hit two years back.

None of them have the muscle or fire that is required for an intensive power shakedown. In the past they were desperately trying to rope in Mubasher Lucman of the Mian Group, who is considered the brain and the flame behind the ruling group. However, Mubasher is fiercely loyal to Mian Amjad and has no political aspirations. Even the Pushtoon rivals were at one time frantic to have Mubasher in their group. Senior posts were offered to him but to no avail as he is embroiled in his own battle with the Chairman Federal Film Censor Board Zia Ud Din Khattak.

Zia Uddin represents the Federal Bureaucracy and is strongly supported by his own Culture Minister from FATA. Mubasher does have friends in high places and is considered by many the saviour of the ailing Pakistan Film Industry. His directorial debut "Pehla Pehla Pyar" is already getting raving views and he is all set to create history with the film’s release. It is expected that Pehla Pehla Pyar will be the turning point for the entire industry, but it is Lucman; who has been the advocate of the "Soft Image" in the film industry and feels that unless the industry is willing to develop a, "Paradigm Shift"; neither the government nor the masses will support it.

He also advocates the use of new technology, check on piracy, cut in duties, institutions for the craft and a bilateral trade between the SAARC countries. He has also called for a revamping of the existing cinemas and studios calling them "Dinosaurs."

Mubasher says, "We made excellent movies in the past, now that we have stopped our competitors improved tremendously and hence the gap has doubled. We can’t bridge the gap unless we concentrate on two key areas, importing technology and concentrating on our regional films that are our real strength," he adds. Lucman feels "While we cannot beat India at its game of glamour and glitz, we surely can turn the tables in Punjabi and Pushto films as the Indians are very bad in them." Lucman has also suggested a new word for Lollywood. "I think we should not imitate someone, the least we can do is come up with an original name for our own industry such as FIlmistaan or Dreamworld," he adds.

Meanwhile, Lucman has denied all rumours of heading the most prestigious body of the industry. "I have neither the time nor the inclination for it. I am not cut out for politics," he says. "There is a new administrator appointed by the Government of Pakistan and it is his job to ensure fair and smooth elections, definitely not mine, he added."

Prime Tv goes free to air from 1st July for two weeks only.

One thing which I dont like about Geo is too much coverage is given to Indian news and in the entertainment section is always Bollywood.
